
VAUQUELIN Louis Nicolas, French Chemist ( 1763-1829 ). Discovered the chromium in 1797 which it so named because of the numerous lively colors of its compounds (from Greek, chrome-plated, color).
He was a professor to the École des Mines (French engineering school) and to Polytechnic in 1795, in the Collège de France in 1801; member of the Institute and the director of the school of Pharmacy in 1803; he professed the chemistry to the Museum (1804), to the Faculty of Medicine (1809).
